Mount Apo ~ Davao del Sur & Cotabato

Towering at 2,954 meters above sea level, Mount Apo is the highest peak in the Philippines  a true crown jewel for mountaineers and adventurers. Its name, “Apo,” means “grandfather” or “elder” in several Mindanaoan languages, befitting its status as the country’s ultimate summit challenge.

This active stratovolcano straddles the provinces of Davao del Sur and Cotabato, and is part of the Mount Apo Natural Park, a protected area known for its rich biodiversity. Trekkers can expect to encounter everything from towering dipterocarp forests to moss-covered cloud forests, and even surreal volcanic boulder fields near the summit.

Why Climb Mount Apo?

For seasoned hikers, conquering Mount Apo is more than just a climb  it’s a rite of passage. Completing this trek earns you bragging rights, not just for its height but also for the endurance, skill, and mental toughness required.

The reward? Sweeping 360-degree views of Mindanao’s vast landscapes  from glimmering Lake Venado to the sprawling Davao Gulf. On clear days, you might even spot Mount Matutum and the peaks of the Kitanglad Range in the distance.

Adventure Tip

Prepare for rapidly changing weather and terrain  you could start in warm lowlands, trek through misty forests, and end up on windswept volcanic rock. Layered clothing, reliable trekking boots, and waterproof gear are non-negotiables.

Environmental Reminder

Mount Apo is a protected natural park. Follow Leave No Trace principles, respect wildlife, and coordinate with accredited guides and local tourism offices. The mountain has faced closures in the past due to forest fires and over-tourism, so responsible trekking is a must.
