Mt. Hamiguitan Range, Davao Oriental

A Natural Treasure and UNESCO World Heritage Site

Nestled in the southeastern part of Mindanao, Mt. Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the Philippines’ ecological gems and a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014. It is celebrated for its extraordinary biodiversity and unique habitats, including the world-famous pygmy forest, where centuries-old trees grow to just about a meter tall due to soil conditions and elevation.

The sanctuary spans over 6,834 hectares and ranges from 75 meters to 1,637 meters above sea level. This elevation gradient creates a variety of ecosystems, from coastal forests to mossy cloud forests, each supporting rare and endemic species. The Philippine eagle, one of the rarest birds of prey in the world, soars here, alongside the Philippine warty pig, tarsiers, and over a hundred orchid species, some found nowhere else on Earth.

Eco Activities to Experience

Along the way, forest rangers, trained in both conservation and safety, will point out rare plants, animal habitats, and share local folklore connected to the mountain.

2. Birdwatching

With over 140 bird species recorded in the sanctuary, including the Philippine eagle and the endangered Mindanao lorikeet, birdwatching here is a must for wildlife photographers and enthusiasts. The early morning hours offer the best sightings, when the forest comes alive with birdsong.

3. Visit the Pygmy Forest

The highlight of Mt. Hamiguitan, the pygmy forest is a surreal landscape of miniature trees and moss-covered ground, resembling a bonsai garden crafted by nature over centuries. Its stunted vegetation is the result of nutrient-poor soil and high elevation, making it a rare ecological phenomenon.
