Tinuy-an Falls ~ Surigao del Sur

Often hailed as the “Niagara Falls of the Philippines,” Tinuy-an Falls is a breathtaking 95-meter-wide curtain of cascading water located in Bislig City, Surigao del Sur. This three-tiered natural wonder drops from a height of about 55 meters, creating a powerful yet serene spectacle. The thunderous roar of the water, the cool mist on your skin, and the lush green surroundings make this an unforgettable nature escape.

Tinuy-an is more than just a photo-worthy spot—it’s a place where you can immerse yourself in nature’s raw beauty. Visitors often take a bamboo raft ride that brings you right under the main cascade, letting you feel the refreshing spray and sheer force of the falls up close. Swimming in the natural pool below is another must-try, especially during hot, sunny days. If you’d rather take it slow, there are shaded areas and picnic spots where you can simply enjoy the view and the soothing sound of rushing water.

The falls are part of a protected watershed area, so expect to see abundant flora and fauna. Local guides are available to share stories about the site’s history and legends—many believe that the name “Tinuy-an” came from a local tale of tribes working together to drive away invaders, symbolizing unity and cooperation.

Best Time to Visit

For an unforgettable experience, plan your trip in the early morning. Around 9:00 a.m., sunlight filters through the mist, creating beautiful rainbows across the falls—a magical sight that’s perfect for photography. The rainy season (June to November) makes the falls more powerful and dramatic, but be cautious of slippery paths. The dry season (December to May) offers gentler flows and safer swimming conditions.
